Quick Fix: Unable to delete e-mail on an iPhone™/iPad™

There is an issue with Apple iOS that sometimes prevents you from deleting messages.

For iOS v 6.0 or later

Step 1

Close the Email and Settings apps if they are running in the
background

Step 2

In Settings open the Mail, Contacts, Calendars menu.

Step 3

Select your email account.

Step 4

Select the top button (the one that shows your email address) to open your email settings.

Step 5

At the bottom of the Account information click Advanced

Step 6

Under Mailbox Behaviors, choose the correct folder On The
Server for Drafts, Sent, Deleted

For iOS v 5.0 or prior

Step 1

In Settings open the Mail, Contacts, Calendars menu.

Step 2

Select your email account.

Step 3

Select the top button (the one that shows your email address) to open your email settings.

Step 4

At the bottom of the Account information click Advanced

Step 5

Click on Deleted Mailbox.

Step 6

The On the Server – Trash option should already be selected.  Click
on On My iPhone – Trash to select it, then click on the Server Trash. This should reset the way your device deletes messages.
